BMW S1000RR

About as perfect a 1000cc bike as you're every likely to ride, the S1000RR is clear evidence that BMW are just as capable of creating superbikes as they are super cars. Launched in 2010, you really can't go wrong with any model as the bike has remained consistently brilliant since its inception. Indeed, there are plenty of great second-hand options available through findandfunmycar.com, all of which will satisfy your hunger for a sleek, stable and seriously exhilarating riding experience.

Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade

If you're looking for high performance at a low price, look no further than Honda's iconic Fireblade – in particular the 2006-07 model. A real beauty to look at, the Fireblade is also a real beast to ride: fusing a quality engine with exceptional build, Honda really have created a game-changing sportster. If you can find yourself a well looked-after, low-mileage model, then it's hard to think of a better value, used 1000cc bike on the modern market.

Suzuki GSX-R1000

Another reasonably-priced Japanese addition to the list, the K5 and K6 models (2005-06) of the GSX-R1000 well and truly burned their rubber into biking folklore. Both models really did represent Suzuki at the very top of their game, seamlessly combining jaw-dropping looks, hair-raising horsepower and an unshakeable chassis. If you can't get your gloves on the K5 or K6, then fear not, because the entire range represents a veritable feast of powerhouses and prowess.

Ducati 1198S

They say you get what you pay for in life and, when you pay that little bit extra for a Ducati, you really do get yourself a belter of a bike. From its unrivalled brand heritage to traditional red colourway; V-twin engine to Öhlins suspension – this Ducati really does put the super in superbike. As previously stated, you are going to have to shell out more for a 1198S than the other bikes on this list; but for the sheer performance, joy and bragging rights that come with owning a Ducati – it's worth every penny.

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R

No self-respecting list of used 1000cc bikes would be complete without a Kawasaki – and the final bike on this list is a bona fide gem. Sleek, sassy and scintillating, the ZX-10R is a lighter bike with radial brakes and an ultra-narrow chassis – and represents Kawasaki at the very top of their game. The only real problem when buying a used model, is being torn between colourways: do you choose the stealthy and mysterious all-black model, or the eye-catching, head-turning lime green one? A tough decision, granted – but as a used bike buyer, there are certainly worse problems to be faced with, right?
